Build the exact 5x6 position

Use the edit tools to place either colour, move a piece, erase a square, clear the board, or reset to the seeded setup. The five-file, six-rank board stays visible while you work.

Switch from editing to legal play

Editing is intentionally flexible, but the Play tab uses legal moves when both kings are present. That lets you arrange an example first and then test whether the intended line actually works.

Share or move the position

Copy the position text or share a URL that carries the board setup. You can also import position text later, which makes a diagram repeatable instead of leaving it trapped in a screenshot.

Create a clean teaching diagram

Add arrows, highlights, symbols, and a title, then download or share the rendered board image. This is useful for explaining a tactic, reconstructing a mistake, or publishing a compact puzzle.

Style the whole diagram

Swap the board theme, piece set, background, and move style before you export. Preview combinations until the position reads clearly—or until the board has exactly the amount of drama it deserves.

Keep a draft while the idea is cooking

The Sandbox remembers your working position on the device, so an unfinished diagram does not have to disappear when you leave. Reset when you want a clean slate; otherwise, come back and keep building.

Common questions

Can I place pieces anywhere?

Yes. Edit mode allows free placement, movement, and erasing so you can build the position you need.

Can I test legal moves after editing?

Yes. With both kings on the board, switch to the Play tab to test the position using legal move rules.

Can I share the finished position?

Yes. You can copy position text, share a position URL, or export a styled board image.

Can I change how the exported board looks?

Yes. Choose a board, pieces, background, and move style, then preview the combination before sharing or downloading the diagram.

Will my unfinished Sandbox position still be there?

The current Sandbox draft is kept on the device so you can leave and return to the position later.
